Susan Kistenmacher, a 7th & 8th grade science teacher at the Wiscasset Middle School, has been named the 2011 Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation Teacher of the Year. Ms. Kistenmacher received this recogntion as she is well known for the multiple opportunities she provides for her students to gain a broader understanding of how people, societies, and the natural systems relate to each other, and how to do so sustainably. Her science lessons engage her students in authentic problem-solving and critical thinking as she strives to connect her students to science-based information on environmental issues. Ms. Kistenmacher has worked with the other teachers to integrate many curriculum areas into the theme of conservation. Some of these projects have included the Sheepscot River Watershed Project, the Monsweag Dam Project, the
insect collection, the clamming project, and the environmental program at Chewonki. Congratulations to Susan Kistennmacher on this outstanding recognition.
