Dear Parents/Guardians,

This week, another dangerous trend surfaced among our youth.  The “Momo Challenge” allegedly encourages children to commit dangerous and potentially violent acts through social media and video games, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Minecraft, Fortnite and Peppie Pig.  Momo is a ghoulish-looking avatar that has threatened and cyberbullied children across the world, according to some articles. If children refuse to do the “challenge,” Momo allegedly threatens to leak personal information, leaves disturbing messages, and sends violent images.

Articles on the issue have mixed opinions. Some articles state that the “Momo” figure is a hoax and does not exist, while other reports state that “Momo” is showing up on these sites. A Google search of the challenge will show videos and articles

Our stance at Windsor Elementary is that this is a reminder for all adults to be ever-vigilant in regards to children’s use of the internet and social media.  Parents are being encouraged to monitor their children’s activity. If you hear students talking about the Momo Challenge, then please address the dangers if you feel comfortable as well as direct them to Cory King, the Student Support Specialist or Julie Johnson, the school social worker.  If you have any questions, please reach out. As always, your eyes and ears into the lives of our students are much appreciated. Thank you!
