- Ethan Barrett, Student at Windsor Elementary School, Named Promising Young Writer
Ethan Barrett from Windsor School, has been recognized as a Promising Young Writer by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Ethan's work earned the highest distinction of Superior. He is one of only three Maine students to achieve this ranking since 2012.
The Promising Young Writers Program represents NCTE’s commitment to early and continuing work in the development of writing. The school-based writing program was established in 1985 to stimulate and recognize writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands are eligible to nominate students.
Windsor School was allowed to nominate one 8th grade student. 8th graders submitted two pieces of writing to a panel of four judges. Ethan's work received the highest score and was sent on to the national level.
On the National level, schools nominated 129 students. Of that number, 44 received the highest award, Certificates of Recognition, and 85 received Certificates of Participation.Two independent judges evaluated each submission holistically on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.
Ethan is the son of Dianne Peaselee and Wayne Barrett of Windsor. Ethan plans to attend Snow Pond Academy in the Fall.
